Eamonn Campbell 1946 - 2017

Yesterday the 26th of October 2017, I, along with hundreds of others of musicians and fans, attended the funeral of Eamonn Campbell. I extend my sympathies to the family, friends of Eamonn. Eamonn was a fine guitarist and lovely character.

My first meeting with Eamonn was about 20 years ago. The Dubliners were scheduled to appear at a charity event, that I was booked at too. When I arrived in the car park of the venue, I was met with calls from one of the organizers; "Gerry, did you bring your speakers!" "Yes", I shouted before the van had stopped. Frantically the organiser began telling me, "The Dubliners are here I didn't think they'd make it, and now there's no speakers, 'cause they want to play a few tunes." "No problem," I said, "I have everything we need" The light of heaven to you gasun," was the reply.

After the gig, Eamonn and I were chatting, it was our first time to meet. Being nervous, I was explaining that I was breaking strings too often. Eamonn immediately took a detailed look at my guitar and advised me how to sort out the problem. We had a pint and chatted. We met a few more times after that and I always enjoyed chatting with him about guitars and music. I was lucky to have been one among so many who were touched by his gentle spirit. He'll be greatly missed.
