Friends of Banjo Barney gig in Donnycarney

I recently got together with members of the McKenna clan to promote the Donnycarney Trad Fest happening over 4 days in June from the 13th to the 16th. I’ll be playing a spot at Saturdays gig on the 15th.  The gig is dedicated to the memory of Barney McKenna who, for over fifty years, was a member of The Dubliners.
We got together in the GAA Centre Parnell Park to meet with organisers and the media.  First thing on the agenda though was a few tunes with Padraig McKenna and Séan Óg McKenna.  Within minutes I re-connected the style of banjo playing that belongs to the McKenna’s.  It took me back to the days in Meath with Barney, Mickey, Colm and all the rest of the players who, like me, liked life at our own pace.  We had long afternoons in cosy bars when the music was flying. Thankfully the music is alive and sounding as good as ever!
The festival is shaping up to be a long term fixture on the musical skyline although all the acts for the weekend have yet be confirmed, I’ll post that information when it’s confirmed.
Well done to all involved especially the lads in Parnell Park GAA, thanks for the lovely welcome, the stories, the food, and the coffee/pints.
