  1. Rise Up

From the album Things heard

"Rise up" highlights the homelessness situation in Ireland which occurred as a result of Government borrowing and lending to the property market. It also mentions the discovery of the remains of infants and young children in a 'workhouse' in County Galway, Ireland. The situation caused outrage on social media, people posted how ashamed they were to be Irish! The message in the song encourages the people to "rise up" above the feelings of anger and shame, and realize that the way forward is through acceptance of our collective past and the inclusion of "everyone" especially those who lost their lives through the actions of others.

Lyrics

When the world lets you down
It’s so hard to come ‘round
Who can you trust when
When the system has ground you to dust

If we’re going to make progress
Then the fact we must address
We must have compassion
And accept that we all belong

Rise up, rise up, rise up
Rise up, rise up, rise up
Rise up, rise up
We need to rise up
We need to, - rise up, rise up
Rise up, rise up, rise up
Learn from past mistakes
Do what it takes to rise up

When you feel life is sweet
There’s someone else on the street
wrapped in a sleeping bag
trying to survive (trying to stay alive)

It could be you lying there
You’d want someone to care
Like the ones hunkered down with their kids
Or laid out in the street (down at your feet)

Rise up, rise up, rise up
Rise up, rise up, rise up
Rise up, rise up
We need to rise up
We need to, - rise up, rise up
Rise up, rise up, rise up
Learn from mistakes
Do what it takes to rise up

From the darkest of times
On this island of ours
The systems have failed us,
But they’re only man-made

They’ve broken up families
yes it’s cost many lives,
sent the kids back to their maker
When they opened their eyes

Rise up, rise up, rise up
Rise up, rise up, rise up
Rise up, rise up
We need to rise up
We need to, - rise up, rise up
Rise up, rise up, rise up
Learn from mistakes
Do what it takes to rise up

Rise up, rise up
(Above the auld notions)
Rise up, Rise up
(Above all the fear)
Rise up, Rise up
(count every person)
Rise up, rise up
(who’s ever been here)
Rise up, Rise up
no-one standing alone
Rise up, Rise up
(Carry every soul home)
Out of the darkness and into the light, we’ve had enough of the night

Rise up, rise up
(Bring people together)
Rise up, Rise up
(Reach out for better)
Rise up, Rise up
(Learn from each other)
Rise up, rise up
(Have courage together)
Rise up, Rise up
(no-one standing alone)
Rise up, Rise up
(Carry every soul home)
Out of the darkness and into the light, we’ve had enough of the night
